The group was set up to provide help, support, advice and assistance for people with Parkinson's Disease (PWP) and their carers. Meetings are held twice a month where general discussions take place as well as addressing individual problems that members may have. There is a keep fit class as part of the bimonthly sessions specifically tailored for the needs of PWP. We also have a singing session 'Singing Links' which takes place twice a month. There is a lot of evidence that singing has a positive impact on the voice for those with Parkinson's as well as being an enjoyable activity.
Why the community needs us
The main purpose of the Group is to enable People with Parkinson's (PWP) to remain independent for as long as possible by promoting physical & mental health. There are 2 group meetings each month, one with a guest speaker, the other more of an information and social occasion. There is a keep fit class, a theatre Club, a Gardening section and very importantly a "Carers Section" These measures help to keep a PWP out of Council Care, saving large sums of money. Our guest speakers range from health professional, alternative health therapists and technological entrepreneurs who have developed equipment that can assist sufferers to manage their condition with less effort or pain.
Our impact on the community
From the 12 people who first met in 2006 has grown a support Group 100 members - sufferers+ Spouses and Carers and volunteers who meet as one big family providing support for each other whenever and whatever is necessary. This ranges from getting shopping, to support and comfort for the bereaved. Firm and lasting friendships have been established with emphasis on our motto "No one should face Parkinson's alone"
