A.I.S was set up to relieve poverty, distress and improve the life of refugees and asylum seekers from different African countries living in Nottingham and its surrounding area. We provide support through our group of volunteers to refugees, asylum seekers and their families. We offer help with school placements, Saturday supplementary classes for children, advocacy, advice and support with a whole range of issues including: access to public services, job search support and welfare rights.
Why the community needs usFrom 2003 to date AIS carried out different projects, targeting youth and the African community in general. Through its Supplementary Classes, it has taught more than 200 children for the past four years; some students had achieved excellent results at school leading to its recognition and some students towards university courses. We have provided placements for two students for Year 10 from Nottingham Emmanuel Secondary School Nottingham, as part of their Work Experience.
Our impact on the communityFrom 2005 to date as a result of our supplementary school 210 refugees and asylum seekers children whose English is their second language have successfully achieved the education achievement and some are now doing well in colleges and other are also doing well at universities. 2 young people from Nottingham Emmanuel School have received school work experience from us and as a result of our different training 20 adults have received accredited certificate in a HEALTHY EATING course.
