BCA gives adults with learning disabilities a voice. It enables them to have their wishes taken into account when decisions are made about their lives. BCA and its projects (Powys People First, Healthy Lives, Wildcats and Choircats) aims to give members the confidence to be active and engaged citizens in their wider community.
Why the community needs us BCA enables its members to be visible in the community. All to often those with learning difficulties are excluded and ignored in their own communities. By breaking down barriers and promoting social inclusion, we help members gain the confidence to speak up for themselves.
Our impact on the community We support over 200 adults within Powys and regularly host Powys People First Groups, Healthy Lives groups, drama and singing groups and member meetings.
COVID-19 Projects Due to the current situation we are unable to run our weekly activities and meetings. However, this has not stopped us continuing to help and support our members across Powys.
Firstly, we have been delivering Well Being Care parcels, including: DVDs, craft kits, books, pamper kits, recipes and easy read information on the latest pandemic advice (each parcel is tailored to the individual receiving it). These parcels help with mental well being, giving members activities and ideas to complete and keep their minds active.
Secondly, we have also transferred our weekly meetings onto Zoom! This has been a great success with more and more members joining each week. It allows us all to feel connected to friends and members across Powys, gives us a chance to catch up and talk about how we are all feeling the effect of Covid and lockdown.
Our Healthy Lives Project has also been finding great places for socially distanced walks and has been creating scavengers hunts for members. They have also been meeting up with members who live in very rural places and going on socially distanced walks and talks.
As well as these new ways of working, our advocacy work continues via phone calls, socially distanced garden visits and joining online meetings.
