Beckley Island was created to fund COVID-related research projects, looking at 1. how to treat a range of mental health disorders due to, or exacerbated by, COVID-19, such as anxiety, adjustment disorder, and PTSD, and 2. how to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 by improving resilience in people at most risk such as for the treatment of diabetes, and inflammatory conditions.
Why the community needs us
• We are facing an ever-worsening mental health epidemic, which has been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, and the resulting imposed social distancing, and lockdown measures. Everywhere, rates of anxiety, depression and addiction are on the rise, exerting a vast personal and economic toll.
• Psychiatry is largely ill-equipped to remedy this situation, and there is an urgent need for novel therapies and treatments.
• There are many innovative therapies and medicines that are showing great promise to be the next breakthrough in mental health. For example the Beckley Foundation, as well as several publicly-listed companies such as Compass Pathways, Mindmed, and Field Trip, have been conducting clinical trials to provide further evidence that their medicines and therapies are safe and highly effective, (e.g. PTSD, treatment-resistant depression, end-of-life existential anxiety, nicotine addiction), with both immediate and long-lasting effects.
• It is essential to conduct more research into the therapeutic applications of highly promising and innovative treatments to mitigate the risk factors of COVID-19, such as diabetes and other inflammation-related diseases.
Our impact on the community
Beckley Island supports research in order to develop treatments for a wide range of medium and long term disorders that have been brought on or exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. Our goal is to address the Mental Health, Addiction, and Pain management crises through bold and innovative new treatments and therapies.
