BK.LUWO provides a safe and neutral learning environment for older refugee and immigrant women of African descent, but opens to women in the wider community and anyone seeking support; Runs informal drop-in sessions for share learning, creative skills development using craft, textile, knitting, crochet/embroidery, computer skills, storytelling and homeland language to preserve cultural heritage; Holds community and cultural events to share and celebrate the rich heritage with the wider community
Why the community needs usBK LUWO is different to other services as it offers culturally appropriate activities to a 'hard-to-reach' group, attracting participants in a relaxed way with a warm welcome and providing a learning space in a safe, mutually supportive atmosphere. New skills are learnt and existing skills are passed on.
Our impact on the communityBK LUWO is a user-led community group with huge impact through empowering its participants, improving mental and emotional health, skills mastery, confidence and self-worth, while bringing people together to break isolation and reduce social exclusion. Some participants now use their learnt skills to make items for personal use or sell the product. Some who could not, are now able to communicate in English. Women find listening ears and peer support, share concerns and pray or laugh together.
