Bristol Black Carers is a multi-award-winning charity dedicated to supporting carers and their families from Caribbean, African and Asian communities, while remaining open to anyone who reaches out for help. Bristol Black Carers addresses this gap by offering person-centred, holistic and culturally responsive support. We take time to understand each carer’s lived experience, recognising the importance of culture, faith, family dynamics and community. Our services include one-to-one emotional support, advocacy, wellbeing activities, information and guidance, and practical help to navigate complex health and social care systems. Carers provide essential care for loved ones with disabilities, long-term illness, mental health needs or age-related conditions. Yet many experience isolation, exhaustion, financial hardship and declining mental and physical health. For carers from the Caribbean, African and Asian communities, these challenges are often compounded by stigma around caring and mental health, language barriers, mistrust of statutory services, and a lack of culturally appropriate support. As a result, many carers do not access help until they are in crisis.

Why the community needs us
Bristol Black Carers exist because many carers, particularly from racially minoritised communities, face deep-rooted inequalities, cultural barriers and systemic disadvantage that often leave them unseen, unheard and unsupported. We are trusted within the communities we serve. Carers come to us because they feel understood, respected and safe. By reducing isolation, strengthening resilience and empowering carers to prioritise their own wellbeing, we help prevent burnout and crisis, enabling carers to continue their caring roles with dignity and support.
