When Dorset County Council decided to close Charmouth Library, the community fought to keep it open. It WILL be kept open with full library services (with assistance from DCC) but will be funded and run by volunteers as a community hub open to tourists and residents alike with free wi-fi, hot & cold drinks, snacks, locally produced crafts for sale, tourist information and space for clubs, classes and social interaction for all ages.

Why the community needs us

Charmouth currently has no casual drop-in facilities - somewhere safe to go and read the paper, have refreshments, get some information, use the computer or wi-fi or simply chat to someone. For most of the year, it is not even possible to buy a cup of tea or coffee as the cafes, restaurants and pubs are closed. Charmouth Central will fill these gaps in provision.

Our impact on the community

As Charmouth Central will be open Monday to Friday from 2 to 5 (or later) and Saturday 10.30 to 12.30, residents and tourists alike will be able to use all its facilities, not just as a library but as an internet cafe. There will be opportunities of joining or instigating clubs, classes and meetings of all kinds either free or at very low expense. There will be less social isolation, particularly for older people, and opportunities for education for younger people.
