We are a Community Benefit Organisation made up of a small group of volunteers who are seeking to purchase Cwmbach Community Wetlands which sits between Aberaman, Cwmbach and Aberdare. The area is 27 acres in size and is home to a huge variety of wildlife and plants, some of which are rare and protected, including otters. The land comprises a variety of habitats including rare natural wetlands. The area also serves the valley as a natural floodplain, holding the water from the River Cynon when it bursts its banks – the latest incident of this nature happened only a few weeks ago.
The area has been increasingly used and supported by the community since people began visiting during lockdown. This led to curiosity regarding ownership of the land. We eventually found out that the land was privately owned. The owner was located and has agreed to sell the land to us for £80,000.
This is a project that has the potential to have far reaching positive effects for present and future generations. If we are successful in raising the money to purchase the land then it will be a wetlands that truly belongs to all of us, forever.
