At the Disabled Sailors Association we offer active sailing to all disabled people, irrespective of how complex their needs.  Other organisations that offer sailing to disabled people sometimes turn people away because they cannot cater for their disabilities.  At DSA, we never turn anyone away.
25 years of research, development and adaptions have enabled us to create a yacht, a catamaran and a fleet of dinghies which can be sailed by anyone, whatever their ability.  No one is a spectator on one of our boats unless they chose to be. To date, around 40,000 disabled people have had the chance to sail with us.
New for 2020 is a state-of-the-art dinghy design which cannot capsize or sink. Our disabled sailors have been consulted and involved in the design process from start to finish, with the result that our dinghies can be enjoyed as much by able-bodied carers and family members as by the disabled people themselves. We are looking, in time, to have a fleet of 20 dinghies, mostly based in Port Solent.
Around 70% of our sailors are aged under 25 - get 'em young and keep 'em keen! We hope in time that introducing young people to our dinghies will start a groundswell movement to reintroduce sailing to the Paralympics - perhaps, even, in our dinghies.
We also offer a dinghy loan scheme which enables disabled people to 'own' one of our dinghies at no cost to them. We build, insure and maintain the dinghy and the only proviso is that they must be able to make use of it and happy to invite their disabled friends to have a go at sailing it.
Future plans include developing a totally unique, bespoke children's catamaran, which will include lower windows, smaller, lower, touch-screen and voice activated controls, lower toilets, height adjustable sinks and many other adaptations, for our younger and smaller sailors - this will benefit people in wheelchairs as well.
Our most exciting and ambitious future plan is to build a super yacht capable of circumnavigating the globe. We already have membership of over one thousand disabled people who are interested in the possibility.
Besides making sailing accessible for all disabled people - the only sport that people with very complex needs can access, in some cases - our mission is to make it affordable. We make a very small charge for one of our sailing days as people value something that they have to pay for more, but most of our expenses - the cost of our Crew, berthing fees, insurances, fuel, travel, administrative and maintenance - come from generous donations from Charitable Trusts and philanthropic corporations and individuals.
Your support is greatly appreciated.
