Dewi's Acre, or Erw Dew in Welsh, is an exciting new Community Garden being developed in the heart of St. Davids behind the cathedral. This project is the result of collaboration between St Davids Cathedral and Eco Dewi, two organisations passionate about protecting our local natural environment and caring for the local community. The project began in November 2020.
It is likely that there has been a garden on this site for centuries, but it has unfortunately been too overgrown to use in recent years, so with a small team of volunteers we have brought it back to life for both people and wildlife! Work began in November 2020 to establish the new garden and we were very fortunate to receive some tools, plants and materials for raised beds via a Local Places for Nature package (a Welsh Government scheme) with the help of Keep Wales Tidy. We've made a good start but there's plenty more to do in order to create a space that can benefit as many of our local community and visitors as possible, whilst still being a sanctuary for wildlife. We aim for there to be:
- an opportunity to grow fruit and vegetables that will be shared with the community
- an area for flower growing
- an area for parents with young children to socialise and for kids to explore, play & learn
- outdoor art installations and creative inspiration
- plenty of space for wildlife with new habitat features
- as well as an area for visitors to rest & reflect.
We believe the garden will not only benefit our local residents but also be a peaceful and popular space for visitors to explore and a shining example of the St Davids Peninsula community working together.
The cathedral has kindly offered a small amount of annual financial support but in order to make this garden a real success and a long term sustainable project, managed by the community, we will always need additional funds. Whilst we are always on the look out for grants, small donations from visitors and community members is very much appreciated. You can either make a one-off donation or set-up a regular donation. And of course, if you can add Gift Aid that would be greatly appreciated.
We hope you have already seen the garden or will be able to visit soon, and all ideas and suggestions are very welcome. And if you'd like to volunteer in the garden with us, please just get in touch with us at hello@dewisacre.org.uk.
Thank you
