Doe Hey Bowling and Social Club is situated in Farnworth, Bolton, in one of the top 7% of deprived boroughs in the country. The average age of the Club membership is 71. One of our star players Eric Tomlinson, is 89 and up until 2018 was the team captain. Eric loves playing bowls and looks forward to every game. Eric says ‘I love the game, the camaraderie, the banter and the competitive spirit in which the game is played’. This is much the same for all of our members. Chatting, being outside in a pleasant environment, exercising, playing a relatively low entry skills game gives a tremendous boost to your feeling of wellbeing.

The Doe Hey site is owned by Bolton Council but due to budget cuts, it has to limit it’s work on the bowling green to grass cutting only. All other aspects of green maintenance and improvement have to be funded or carried out by the Club Members. In 2018 the Club suffered an arson attack on the pavilion, which was set on fire inside, and could have caused the Club to fold. Fortunately, the Club was kindly allowed to play on another local green and so kept going whilst Bolton Council carried out £30k of repairs, through it’s insurance.

The biggest challenge now for the Club is the considerable ongoing cost of maintaining the bowling green each year. Up until recently due to previous neglect, this was in a very sorry state. However, an increase in subscriptions by Members and help from grants by organisations such as Local Giving has meant the Club has seen a resurgence in fortune and the green is in much better condition, as is the Club generally.

There is always something else that needs doing or paying for though and consequently our fund raising efforts are ongoing. As well as finding between £900 and £1200 for remedial work on the green each year, we need to start replacing the safety boarding around the perimeter of the green which will cost around £500. Any help we receive from donors is therefore gratefully received and very much appreciated.

We are always on the lookout for new members and would be particularly interested in hearing from any ladies who wish to join us. It’s only a few years ago that ladies made up a significant proportion of the team. However, their numbers have sadly dwindled away, mainly due to ill health.
