Fir Tree Fishery Access for All creates new opportunities for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups who have not been able to participate in angling due to a lack of disabled facilities and bank side support. Much of the work we do involves supporting groups such as Stroke charities, specialist schools and brain injury groups to access outdoor activities focused around angling participation.
Why the community needs usThe project actively encourages participation within the community and provides new opportunities for so many more people and new groups who have not had the opportunity to get involved in angling and outddor activities. We have seen it develop new skills, knowledge and confidence within these groups, address isolation issues and provide health benefits to disabled people and stroke victims.
Our impact on the communityMany of the volunteers who support the rehabilitation and disabled angling coaching events are young people who have not engaged at school or who have minor youth offence orders and are now studying at the fishery for recognised qualifications. This is relevant because we have found it to break down barriers and stereotypes that can exist between different generations and individuals of different abilities, developing new relationships between young and old, disabled and able bodied individuals.
