Adult education charity based in Brighton, teaching Adult Literacy and Numeracy and English for Speakers of Other Languages. Also offering careers and training advice, free internet access and ICT tuition, and a range of general adult education classes in everything from art to yoga. Friends Centre is particularly well known for its ability to engage 'hard to reach' adults, including the long-term unemployed, people with mental health difficulties, homeless people and refugees.
Why the community needs usFriends Centre delivers courses across Brighton and Hove, from our main site in central Brighton and from a range of outreach locations in order to meet the needs of the most isolated and vulnerable residents. We work closely with other organisations who refer learners to us and help us to provide holistic and personalised support. As a charity, we can offer smaller classes sizes and a less intimidating, more adult-focused environment than the local FE colleges.
Our impact on the communityFriends Centre learners achieve qualifications that enable them to go on to further training and employment, or to find a better-paid job. They also enjoy raised confidence and self-esteem, improved communication skills, a new ability to help their children with homework and a new sense of belonging to their community.
