Inspiring Journeys of Discovery into the Natural World, for People and for the Planet
We are a centre of natural history excellence with a mission to inspiring journeys of discover into the natural world through our collections featuring three explorers: Gilbert White, 18th century influential naturalist considered the 'father of ecology', Frank Oates, explorer of Africa and Central America, and Captain Lawrence Oates, brave explorer of Antarctica alongside Captain Robert Scott in 1910-1912.
Now we continue their legacies and promote curiosity and exploration of the natural world. With our internationally important collection we welcome over 25,000 visitors a year and 5300 schoolchildren benefit from nature-based education in our Field Studies Centre. Our gardens and 30 acre meadow is managed for biodiversity and conservation. Dedicated, knowledgeable volunteers alongside passionate staff help inspire memorable learning experiences for all ages.
The environmental and historic legacy preserved in our buildings and grounds has never been more relevant to contemporary life. Help us to continue this legacy by supporting our work as an independent charity.
