Supporting bereaved children and young people

Grief Encounter South West provides therapeutic support to children and their families following the death of a parent or sibling. We are the only charity in the area who can offer free professional therapeutic support. Creative therapies allow to children to express their feelings as words often can't be found to voice. We also offer family group work, fun days, advisory services, grief relief kits and a free helpline.

Why the community needs us
All communites and families benefit from children who are growing up in a healthy, balanced emotional state. Sometimes children experience very troubling and worrying times when they are unable to deal with the difficult feelings and thoughts which accompany the death of a parent or sibling. Grief Encounter provides support in an appropriate way to ensure that children's natural development can proceed unhindered by the traumatic events they may have encountered.

Our impact on the community
The outcomes of our work are not always tangible. It may be as simple as a child who is very withdrawn when they first come to the Centre regaining their self-confidence and engaging with people around them. Ultimately it is about giving a child or parent the ability to cope with their emotions and get on with family life. The warm welcoming homely environment of the Centre provides a safe haven for each family member to express and deal with the emotions that they may be experiencing.

Volunteers needed

To assist with administration and reception. Meeting and greeting clients on arrival at Centre. Help with fundraising administration preparation. Always seeking maintenance help to the building and garden.
