To improve the conditions of life of the senior citizens and disabled persons resident in the town of Crewkerne and its neighbouring parishes and for this purpose to provide and manage a Centre at which social, recreational, educational and catering facilities may be available. The Centre also provides a well appointed community centre, whch, when hired out for family and recreational events, provides an income to support the charity, which only receives around 10% of income from public funds.
Why the community needs usCrewkerne is a lively town of 6,500 set to grow by at least another 2,000 in the next 3-4 years. Although this is a popular retirement area there is a substantial younger population with good employment opportunties. There are fewer empty shops than many towns have. The town is famed for supporting its enterprises, such as this Centre and others such as the Aqua Centre and Sports Clubs. The Queens visit to Crewkerne in her Diamond Jubilee year is an indicator of our standing in Somerset.
Our impact on the communityThe Centre benefits the community in many ways. While it's charitable role is to provide friendship, refuge, advice and nourishment to the older sector, it also provides a well appointed function centre for activities, therapy, indoor sport, weight control, business meetings, bingo sessions, family parties, dinner dances and U3A meetings. Many peo[ple have commented on having found a lifeline with us and our next project is to encompass and help those who suffer from dementia.
