Fully accessable sailing for disabled and disadvantaged local young people from Plymouth
Horizons is a children's sailing charity and our aims are to help disadvantaged and disabled children from the inner city communities of Plymouth. We provide learning and educational opportunities that increase self-confidence and improve social and practical skills, through the experience of water-based activities that would normally be beyond their means. Why the community needs us
All of our programmes and activities are designed to boost self esteem, develop self determination and self belief by managing situations they would not normally find themselves. Our impact on the community
All of our activity programmes do not have to be certificated or outcome based. All activities are child centred and designed to maximise their experience and physical enjoyment, whilst giving them a personal and achievable goal in a safe but challenging environment. We are able to run and to award the RYA Youth and Adult sailing schemes plus RYA Sailability schemes. Enabling young people to progress from complete beginner's courses to the more advanced skills and instructor awards.
We are always looking for volunteer helpers, the nature of our activities enables volunteers to take part in many types of roles. These include Fundraising activities such as fetes, collection boxes and grant writing also working with the children on and off of the water (launching and recovering craft, ensuring children are in suitable clothing and Lifejackets worn correctly, to assisting with safety cover and sailing instruction)
