We care for Coventry's heritage & culture proudly promoting it's story and creativity
Culture Coventry celebrates, promotes and conserves Coventry's unique cultural and historic story through it's museums and art galleries: the Lunt Roman Fort, the Priory Visitor Centre, the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum and Coventry Transport Museum. At the Lunt, we tell the story of the Roman struggle to re-assert its dominance after the Iceni rebellion led by Boudicca which resulted in the burning down of Colchester, St Albans and London. The Lunt was built in 60 AD as frontline defence fort.
Why the community needs usThe Lunt Roman Fort is a local community and heritage asset and is of international importance particularly for the early history of the Roman occupation of Britain and was built close to the Fosse Way and Watling St. It is the only reconstructed timber fort in Britain and the only fort within the Roman Empire which includes a Gyrus or horse training ring. Primarily engaging with schools, the Lunt is also used by local groups, engages with volunteers and presents festivals and events.
Our impact on the communityCulture Coventry is fundraising to maintain and improve the museum and visitor experience at the Lunt Roman Fort. Generous support has enabled us to create inspiring new displays in the granary museum, revealing the fort's story as well as the role of the Roman Army, the identities and everyday lives of the soldiers and the fort's relationship with the local Celtic population.
