May Project Gardens (MPG) is an award winning grassroots project, founded in the borough of Merton in 2007 at the back of a council house, and named after co-founder's mother, May, when she died from a lifetime battle with mental illness. We work at the heart of the community, specialising in outreach to vulnerable groups, young people and people of colour, to address poverty, disempowerment and access to resources and influence. We provide practical, affordable and collective solutions for people to live sustainably and disengage with power structures that don't serve their interests. Our youth model Hip Hop Garden won the 2015 Team London Award for innovate work with young people and now supports young refugees and asylum seekers in South London in partnership with Choose Love - Help Refugees. Why the community needs usWe offer safe, healing spaces where people can come together, improve their mental and physical wellbeing, feel part of a community and restore themselves from the hectic, consumer driven and disconnected urban environment they live in. This is done through our community garden in Morden, our monthly music & creative arts event at Cafe Cairo in Clapham; our educational programme at Merton Libraries & across South London youth centres and our bespoke Hip Hop Garden programme for young refugees.
