The Mick Bates Community Memorial Fund has been established to celebrate the life of Mick Bates who died in August 2022 of bone cancer.
Mick lived his life to the full. He gave his time, energy and motivation to benefit others. He was a ‘one-off’ who believed in the strength of people working together and community life. Mick represented Montgomeryshire in the Senedd and in that time campaigning for the rural economy, the environment and led on the introduction of free school milk, Farming Connect and the banning of single use carrier bags. Mick spoke about the need to set up a Fund that could be utilised for the public benefit of the people of Montgomeryshire but particularly Llanfair Caereinion and the Banwy valley. “Mick was a man of vision, enthusiasm and integrity who had the good of the community at heart. The Mick Bates Community Memorial Fund has been set up following donations from his funeral and fundraising. The Fund aims to keep Mick’s legacy alive and award grants from £100 to £1000 to the things he cared about most which were supporting young people to reach their potential, the environment, helping those most in need and bring people together to benefit the community.
The Fund aims to benefit the whole of Montgomeryshire but particularly projects benefiting the people of Llanfair Caereinion and the Banwy valley.
Groups that apply must demonstrate the are properly formed group, club, committee or charity, which must show that the group has charitable aims whilst also benefitting the people of Montgomeryshire but particular Llanfair Caereinion.

We want to help keep his spirit alive through supporting the community groups in Llanfair Caereinion and Montgomeryshire.”Cadvan Evans, Chair of The Mick Bates Community Memorial Fund The grant awards will be made to support young people reach their potential, protect and enhance the environment; help those most in need and to support communities to work together.
- The Fund will open for applications once a year and award grants from £100 to £1000
- It will fund existing projects that can demonstrate they are already successful in making a difference.
- Applicants will need to describe their activities as a project that has a clear set of outcomes to be achieved over a set period of time.
- Where an applicant wants funding for a project that is part of a range of activities they undertake, then they must demonstrate how the funding will be used to support this.
- In order to be eligible to receive funding a group must demonstrate it a constituted voluntary or community group and can demonstrate how they work to benefit the people of Llanfair Caereinion and the Banwy Valley.The application process will be simple and will be promoted through our website

The Fund's has been created by Mick’s grandson Stanley Bates, aged 9 and is of Moel Bentyrch, the mountain that Mick’s farm Rallt Ucha overlooked. It was also a view that Mick himself enjoyed painting.
