Milton Keynes | Community Support & Development
MK Melting Pot aids diverse, underserved groups in Milton Keynes through cultural, wellness, and support programs.
MK Melting Pot is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to connecting with the diverse communities of Milton Keynes. Our mission is to celebrate different cultures and promote their values. We focus on engaging with individuals from often underrepresented groups, including children and young people, low-income families, BAME communities, single parents, and the long-term unemployed. Through various activities and support services, we strive to foster community connections. Recent initiatives include community slow-cooking classes, wellness cafés, employability workshops, and summer programs for children from disadvantaged areas.
Why the community needs us
During the last winter season 3 families known to the MK Melting Pot had to grieve the result of a family member committing suicide. Our families are experiencing stressful times due to bills, high cost of living, not being able to afford heating and a basic meal for the day. This winter we want to raise £5000 to support families struggling and money to keep the MK Melting Pot running so that we can give back to the community.
In Milton Keynes, suicide rates have increased in recent years. For example, in 2021, there were 38 recorded suicides, an increase from 26 the year before. Between 2019 and 2021, there were 76 suicide deaths, contributing to over 200 "deaths of despair," a term that includes deaths from suicide, drugs, and alcohol. This reflects a broader national trend, as Milton Keynes experienced a rise in its suicide rate, particularly affecting young people and those facing financial difficulties due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
Our impact on the community
We support over a 100 people with our food parcels. Our foodbank is run from our Wellbeing Space, a safe haven and place of refuge for people who are isolated, struggle with their mental health or have lost connection with the community around them.
