We deliver experiential workshops to support young people to unleash their creative spirits
Music Relief Foundation (MRF) is a registered community charity 1185747 in Croydon, South London. For over twelve years, we have been serving young people and their families from grassroots communities and have firmly established ourselves as a community hub for the people from the people.
As our name suggests, we harness the power of music and the arts to address youth issues and encourage young people to explore their natural talents, creativity, curiosity and confidence.
We deliver tailored hybrid personal and social development workshops and outreach programmes to cultivate and develop increased motivation and aspirations within schools and the community—a leading voice for UK youth training and arts support services.
Why the community needs usAs a grassroots charity, we provide the community with accessible and affordable opportunities they might not get otherwise. We help reduce the risk of becoming involved in unsafe activities through our targeted intervention programs, such as using drugs and alcohol. Being involved in community activities is a protective factor--that is, it helps young people to make healthy choices. That's because by being involved in an organisation, they can develop a "safe" identity.
Our impact on the communityIn our tenth year, our theme for the year was 'CHANGE'. This was due to several factors, including the global pandemic - Covid 19. We wanted to cement and pull together all our services and ensure that we developed a thriving community hub with music at the core of what we do and through which we could engage with a broader audience and the vehicle to support people with their other needs.
So thereby launching our MRF Music School in November 2021. This school was launched with 30 students and three tutors, offering single keyboard, guitar and vocal lessons—ten weeks a term, one hour weekly.
Almost two years later, the school has more than doubled its size and tutors and offered multiple lessons in keyboard, guitar, samba drums, vocals and choir, with other instruments added.
With a growing demand but low income in terms of funding, we are reaching out to the general public to support us and help us keep the provision of the school and all of our services going.
HistoryMusic Relief Foundation was founded in 2011 by Magdalene Adenaike. The charity was inspired by Magdalene's first-hand experiences of the hardships, isolation, and challenges faced by becoming a teenage parent. During this period, she discovered the transformative power of music and the importance of bringing other teenage mothers together to share their experiences. With these two revelations, the idea for Music Relief Foundation was born.
With over 1000 workshops and counting delivered over our twelve years of existence within schools, the community, and other charity organisations. We have helped over 5000 young people be their best and explore their natural talents, creativity, curiosity, and confidence.
Our services are structured into three different focuses, 1).a). More Than Able – our intervention school's program seeks to train, inspire and develop positive leaders. b). Fencing as an after-school club provision in primary schools.
2). Family and community program – consisting of our holiday activities, Evening With (quarterly events), and coffee mornings.
3). MRF Music School for children, young people and adults from ages five years old.
The impact of our work is evident through the diverse testimonials from the attendees themselves -
