Caters for the general welfare and quality of life of Nigerians and Africans living in and around Nottingham.Nigerian Association has set up a social enterprise restaurant and meeting place called African House which provides a safe and welcoming environment (without language and cultural barriers) for new arrival migrants from Africa settling in Nottingham. It is set in the heart of three deprived wards; St. Anns, Sneinton and The Meadows; the neighbourhood in which our target groups reside.
Why the community needs usAfrican House provides a key early step for new arrival families to begin the process of orientation and integration in a supportive environment staffed by those with the same or similar language and cultural backgrounds. The cafe and restaurant provides a comfortable, non threatening and 'safe' place for refugees and asylum seekers many of whom arrive in the UK severely traumatised and distressed and are further disadvantaged by language and cultural barriers.
Our impact on the communityWe provide an accessible multistranded service designed to meet the wide and varied needs of our target group. New arrivals need intensive support, possibly even food and clothing, and need to understand quickly how to access mainstream services such as; housing, health, community safety, immigration advice, employment and education in order to begin the process of rebuilding their lives. The result is that people have better chance in life.
