Supporting children and young people aged 0-17yrs inclusive, living in Norfolk who have experienced the death of a significant person in their life. We aim to improve the emotional wellbeing of bereaved children by: increasing their confidence and self belief, providing education about the causes of death and enabling families to talk openly about their bereavement. We also provide opportunities to remember those who have died and help children to express and understand their emotions.
Why the community needs usChildren we have supported have displayed signs of grief which include anxiety, loss of appetite, bed wetting, depressive moods, lack of concentration and school refusal. Many of the children and young people referred to Nelson's Journey have complex needs e.g. multiple losses - divorce, separation and children in care. Our range of therapeutic services enable children to express their emotions, remember the person who has died and share their experiences with others in a similar situation.
Our impact on the communityWe find that many bereaved children are very confused and upset by their experience. They can feel that no one understands them which in turn makes them feel isolated, alone and angry. Following our intervention, we hear from families who report on improvements in their children including feeling more able to talk about the person who has died, attendance and performance at school improved, no longer bed wetting, behaviour at home improved, less anxious about leaving their remaining parent.
