Based in North Kensington and serving its poorest wards and those of surrounding London boroughs, for the past 37 years Nova has been working with individuals from marginalised and disadvantaged communities who are looking to achieve their potential and a better future for themselves. Serving over 1,200 users a year we focus on:
• Developing education, skills and confidence
• Raising aspirations
• Promoting opportunities
• Encouraging participation & community involvement
• Enabling greater social inclusion

We work to realise these outcomes through 5 interconnected programmes:
• Education for adults, families and children (English: ESOL & Literacy), Maths, ICT, Science, Coding), Emotional Intelligence, Wellbeing & Health and Fitness
• Pre-Employment information, advice and guidance (IAG)
• Volunteering
• Family Programme (interactive workshops and visits)
• Social Change initiatives (Let’s Talk About Race, The Human Library, TEDx Ladbroke Grove, The Great Get Together, Unsung Heroes Retreats, Ladies Who Lunch)

We responded quickly during Covid, adapting our services and offered interactive online and telephone support services in education, employability and benefits advice for those most vulnerable in society: 750+ individuals. Further, we created a range of interactive online activities for all our programmes including education classes, programs for families and kids, social initiatives and ‘Let’s talk about Race’ series.

90% of our users are from black and minority ethnic and migrant communities, with compounding issues such as refugee backgrounds, long-term unemployed, women returning to work and lone parents. Many of our users have missed out on education & lack confidence, familiarity or language skills to access formal training and mainstream services. Others are in the ‘working poor’ twilight, zero hours economy. These people have been particularly badly affected by Covid-19.  We have re-orientated and expanded our programmes to meet their needs in the current climate.  We anticipate that these Covid related needs will continue or even increase as the employment situation worsens. We also support families with food and home schooling when family members are ill with Covid or are vulnerable due to lockdowns.  People consistently describe Nova as like a family and for many, who have been displaced and feeling lonely, it really is their family.

“This place is a lifeline for so many local people. You can trust staff, they don’t judge you. They listen, they care and most of all, they want you to succeed”. Nova community member
