The Network was set up to "represent the views and wishes of the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities in North Somerset, be a focal point for the BME voluntary sector, provide mutual support in the face of difficulties and prejudice, contribute to the planning and development of local services and enable BME groups and individuals to fully participate in the economic and social life of the area". We now have a Centre to welcome new arrivals and provide a meeting place for BME groups

Why the community needs us

Historically there has been a lack of support and understanding of the needs of the BME population & the benefits that a rich & diverse population can bring to the area. We offer support & promote cross-cultural awareness by providing a focal point for BME voluntary groups; reducing isolation by offering a drop-in and social opportunities; improving confidence and independence by links to health, social care, housing & employment; encouraging participation & contribution to the wider community

Our impact on the community

We've offered support to over 500 people from over 50 nationalities speaking many different languages. We've supported the establishment of 8 independent BME groups which are affiliated to the Network; provided health, social care, housing & employment advice to hundreds of people; reduced social isolation & built confidence; enabled people to move to employment; significantly increased awareness in key local organisations and supported them to meet statutory obligations under the Equalities Act
