Thank you for taking an interest in this truly exceptional community project!

Since it was set up in 2016, ‘The Shed’ has become a much-loved community hub in Okehampton, providing meaningful social activities for men - a place where they can work together to support other community projects and charities. 'Shedders' share skills to repair, recycle & make items, with plenty of tea breaks too!

We welcome all visitors to pop in for a cuppa and bring to us bits for repair! We are very grateful for donations of old tools, wood and items which may otherwise go to landfill; we repair and gift these items to other charities - and/or to sell for our own funds.

In summary......

  • We support mental and physical health:This volunteer led group (no paid staff), provides friendship & support to address loneliness, isolation & enhance mental health. Our wonderful 'Shedders' enable so many people in our community to come together, including disabled, retired, and younger men. 'Shedders' join us for many reasons, some have felt isolated due to poor health or bereavement, equally many are looking for a meaningful social activity due to retirement or unemployment. Others come for a cuppa and a chat – or to learn/share a skill. All are welcome!

  •  We repair and recycle: items to sell for our funds, or to gift to local charities. We also regularly support other local organisations and schools to repair/make equipment for their cause, e.g. bird boxes, planters, & tool repair.

  • We support our wider community: We undertake numerous outreach projects, for example, this autumn we went apple picking from a tree in our local medical centre – the apples were sorted and delivered to our local foodbank and charity kitchens. We helped our local library by building a reading den. Last year we started working with the Okehampton ‘Who Let the Dads Out’ group on a Saturday morning for dads to bring their children to learn wood-work skills together. We also support carers to take a break, whilst their loved one is at the Shed, carers can undertake their own activities and get some welcome respite! Our out-reach work also extends to a wider global community– as we repair and send tools to the charity ‘www.amigos.org.uk' which provides tools to small communities in Uganda.

  • We are looking to the future, fundraising to help many more who want to come to the Shed: We’re now raising funds to help with the running costs of our wheelchair accessible minibus with trailer. This minibus is a key part of our plans for our thriving community of Shedders to continue to grow, and to extend our outreach work too as we can travel to projects together with our tools and equipment!

Please help us to bring our community together to do great things! More information at:
