At Outdoor People, we make the outdoors easy. We believe outdoor play is as essential as literacy or a hug.

As a non-profit, we work to dismantle the physical and social barriers that prevent families from accessing the adventures they deserve.

Through our Outdoor Families Programme, we build parents’ confidence and skills by providing:

  • Regular Family Wild Walks - adventures for children to take their grown-ups on

  • Camping skills workshops

  • Community events to connect families wanting to get outdoors more with the organisations and resources that can help them

  • Where possible, free and reduced price rain coats for families on low incomes

Why it matters:

The statistics for London are stark: 24% of children visit a green space less than once a month, over 250,000 families live in overcrowded housing, and we estimate less than 5% of London schools have a sizable field or natural space for play.

This lack of access disproportionately affects single parents, families with disabled children, and BAME communities. Without outdoor play, children’s mental, physical and emotional health suffers.

Our Impact:

Ober the last 12 years we have helped thousands to get outdoors more.

Over 400 families have joined our Family Wild Walks, exploring the wild spaces nearby.

Over 200 schools are helped by our suport to make their playtimes amazing through the OPAL programme.

Over 100 families have joined our Family Camping holidays.

Every child has the right to play. We help families reclaim that right, one adventure at a time.

Our future

We are now regrouping and relaunching. With a new community room and a commitment to our Hackney Central location, we are focusing on wild walks and supporting families to get outdoors more through skills sharing and gear provision.
