To prevent homelessness by providing support, advice and accommodation to young people aged between 16 and 25 who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) or who think they might be. To promote awareness of the needs of LGBT people and provide training packages for housing and other service providers enabling people to recognise the challenges that a person's sexual orientation presents to them in daily work and life, and promote good practice when engaging with LGBT people.

Why the community needs us

There are many people who are LGBT and would never need the support of Outpost, however, for some young people circumstances mean they are vulnerable and disadvantaged and may have been for a long time. This often begins in childhood when a family discovers their child is LGB or T.We provide person-centred holistic support, providing fully furnished flats to some and support maintaining a current living space to others. We help with basic practical skills, and provide emotional support as well.

Our impact on the community

From April 2010 - March 2011 81% of people moving on moved on to independant living, either as an individual or with partners or friends. 19% returned to their family home. Our young people told us we had helped them to: have more confidence, learn basic living skills, gain independence, reduce their drug/alcohol use, make friends, have a better relationship with their family, gain structure or priorities in their life and be able to budget their finances.Over 90% returned to education.
