Porthmawr Surf Life Saving Club provides high quality volunteer-led lifeguard patrols and training for all ages to ensure members are:
taught water safety from a young age,
learn the fundamentals of rescue, first aid and life saving, and
experience the buzz of surf life saving contests,
whilst always being a safe and fun club for our local community in the St Davids Peninsula.
Located at one of Pembrokeshire's busiest Blue Flag beaches, Whitesands, the club has for decades taken the lead in training up youngsters from the local community in surf life saving skills. Many of these youngsters then go on to work for the RNLI in paid lifeguard roles which are critical to keep visitors and locals safe when using the local beaches. In addition, many of our qualified members also act as Volunteer Lifeguards at busy periods outside of the RNLI covered periods, as well as supporting charitable events like the Whitesands New Year's Day swim.
As with many areas, resources and organised activities for teenagers to keep them entertained, active and learning are dwindling, so the club is more than ever an essential part of the St Davids Peninsula community. It is a key local group and amenity, highly respected and value by the community and involved in many other local events and activities. The club prides itself on keeping membership prices as low as possible, making sure it is attractive to parents and making sure everyone is welcome irrespective of background. In addition, the club has a scheme for subsidising the membership costs for those families struggling with the fees, especially at a time when all costs are increasing.
Beach training takes place every week from Easter to Autumn for our Nippers (7-12 yr olds) and Juniors (13 - 17 yr olds) led by qualified volunteer instructors and helpers who kindly give up their time. In addition our Seniors get stuck in with training as often as possible along with other activities like Rescue Boat training. During the winter months, swimming pool training takes place to maintain fitness, keep youngsters engaged and to have some fun. Whilst all our instructors are volunteers, their training does come with a cost and we are committed to ensuring we follow the training guidance and safety regulations of the Surf Life Saving Association of Wales.
HISTORY The club house is at Whitesands beach and there has been a surf lifesaving presence there since 1961 when the club was formed. Porthmawr Surf Lifesaving Club has a strong and proud history in the community of St Davids, working hand-in-hand with the RNLI and sharing the clubhouse with their Beach Lifeguards. Whitesands Beach is one of Pembrokeshire’s premier surf spots because of its regular waves and strong currents and one of the county's most popular family beaches with its glorious sandy beach, clean water and iconic landscape. The bay is known as Porthmawr in Welsh and the beach is Traethmawr.
CLUBHOUSE The first clubhouse was an old railway carriage in the early 1970s but the current clubhouse was opened in 1991. It has served the club well but is now definitely in need of refurbishment and modernisation. At the same time, the club is in the process of renewing its lease with Pembrokeshire County Council and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority. Once completed we will be able to invest in our clubhouse's future to ensure a safe, resourced and contemporary facility for current and future members, ensuring the long-term viability of this club.
