To create job opportunities for disadvantaged people in a fragile rural area. To recycle waste textiles, by re-using or upcycling them to make high quality fashion items, accessories, soft furnishings and textile art. To provide work-based skills training for people recovering from mental health issues, and other vulnerable and disadvantaged people. This includes hand knitting and crochet, hand and machine sewing,rag-rugging, feltmaking,dress-making and customer service - eco-couture!
Why the community needs usOur business is situated in a beautiful remote and rural area of the Highlands, but it is economically fragile, and quality jobs are few. We are an important hub in our community for young and old alike, and by creating beautiful things from other people's waste we capture the imagination and provide a warm supportive, creative environment for staff, volunteers and trainees alike. We work with all age groups and abilities, and reduce the stigma of mental health by having fun!
Our impact on the communityWe have recycled eight and a half tonnes of textiles in the past three years, reused, recycled or upcycled into high quality textile items which have been given a second chance. Rag Tag 'n' Textile has provided training or support to over 600 people since March 2008 with 22 going on to employment. We produced 5 fashion shows which included 60 people, making, modelling and supporting. Lately, the creation of a travelling exhibition showcases 3 exquisite outfits dramatically focusing on feelings.
