We aim to give children on the autism spectrum the opportunity to interact with and ride horses in an autism-friendly environment. We have a range of activities for the children and their brothers and sisters including a play area, trampoline, a small allotment and rabbits to handle. We hope that families will feel welcomed and supported and we are able to offer advice and strategies on autism-specific issues such as communication and challenging behaviour.
Why the community needs usChildren on the autism spectrum can struggle with sensory issues such as finding certain sounds difficult to cope with, and often find social interaction difficult. Interacting with horses and riding can help with this as well as with communication, anxiety and physical difficulties. It is also an outdoor activity that is healthy and fun for the whole family. Parents can often be isolated and we intend to offer a space where families can meet and share advice and support.
Our impact on the communityParents have noticed that their children are generally calmer after riding; one child started to sleep through the night each time he came. Other children have begun to communicate more; one child said his first word while riding. The most common result is that the children enjoy themselves; for some parents it is difficult to find an activity that their child enjoys. Parents feel that they have found an activity that they can share with their child as a family.
