Marine plastic litter is not just an eyesore. It kills over one million seabirds and 100,000 whales, dolphin, seals and turtles worldwide each year. In Cornwall, over 250 seals have plastic entangled around their necks and every dead northern fulmar now autopsied in the English Channel area has plastic in its gut. Through our beach cleans we remove around 800 sacks of rubbish from our beaches each year and work with schools and other groups to raise awareness about this crisis on our doorstep.
Why the community needs us
We improve our coastal environment and beaches for the benefit of the local community, visitors and wildlife. Our monthly beach cleans are really popular events, attracting up to 60 volunteers, as well as being great exercise and an opportunity to socialise with like-minded folk. There are so many depressing environmental problems in our world today that we can't do anything about, but this is something really positive that makes a noticeable difference to the area where we live.
