Supporting young people affected by crime & bullying to recover their confidence & sense of safety

SAFE! works with young people who have been harmed by crime & bullying. SAFE! provides individually tailored support to help young people cope without responding physically or internalising their feelings; develop strategies to report incidents; and realise it is not their fault if they have been hurt. SAFE! uses protective behaviours and restorative approaches to aid recovery. Without timely support their experience can lead to further problems including absence from school or work.

Why the community needs us

SAFE! helps young people develop tools to allow them to feel safe in their key environments including their home, neighbourhood & school. By developing coping strategies for when they feel unsafe & recognising & developing their support networks, these young people are less likely to go onto criminal behaviour later on. We work to achieve an improvement within the young people in the following areas: safety, anger/ upset about the incident, confidence, happiness & knowing how to access support.

Our impact on the community

SAFE! helps young people develop tools to allow them to feel safe in their key environments including their home, neighbourhood & school. By developing coping strategies for when they feel unsafe & recognising & developing their support networks, these young people are less likely to go onto criminal behaviour later on. Evaluations show our approach is effective; after receiving support, 60% of the young people who initially avoided part of their neighbourhood reduced to 29% during the project.

Volunteers needed

SAFE! Support for Young People Affected by Crime is able to provide opportunities for volunteers in a range of capacities. We try and work with volunteers to find roles which meet their interests and skills as closely as possible. An enhanced CRB check is required to undertake this role and volunteers are required to undergo a formal application process. For more information please email Martha.Beale@safeproject.org.uk.
