Saffron Sheffield helps change lives by providing free, confidential counselling, psychotherapy and group support to women survivors of sexual and domestic abuse, rape, sexual exploitation or trafficking.
"For me, these sessions have meant the difference between ending each day desperately hoping I won't wake up to another, and now looking forward with a positive mind to what the next day will bring" (Service user).
Why the community needs us
Left unaddressed, the effects of abuse and trauma can be lifelong and devastating. Survivors often experience profound disadvantages in all aspects of their lives before they access our services. We know that survivors of abuse and trauma can experience various effects, including mental health issues, depression, anxiety, complex post-traumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder and dissociative personality disorder. Survivors are at risk of self-harm and repeated victimisation.
Our impact on the community
Women tell us they feel more confident and less isolated, and that their physical and mental health is much improved. Their relationships are healthier, and they know how to keep themselves safe. They are no longer at high risk of self-harm and suicide, and they have the strategies to manage their trauma symptoms, such as anxiety, panic attacks, and flashbacks, so they can get on with their lives. "The relief of unburdening myself was like a big black cloud being lifted from my life".
