Our vision is a world in which fewer people die by suicide. We work to achieve this vision by providing confidential, non judgemental emotional support by telephone, email, SMS and face to face. This support is provided by trained Listening Volunteers. In addition we work with numerous organisations in the local community to raise awareness of Samaritans, the help and support that is available to people, and the important of emotional health and well being.
Why the community needs usBy being available all hours of the day and night, we help to alleviate feelings of distress, despair and suicidal thoughts and feelings. By working in partnership with local organisations, we are able to increase awareness and understanding of mental health and well being. Through our referral arrangements with partners we ensure we can offer support to those who need it most, at the time they need it.
Our impact on the communityIn 2017, the Liverpool and Merseyside branch of Samaritans responded to nearly 50 000 calls for help, a huge increase from the 33 000 contacts in 2015. We have nearly doubled our volunteer numbers in recent years, but still more help and support is needed. As we continue to grow, and our newer volunteers become more experienced, we can then increase our work in the local community.
