Special Olympics Sandwell provides Sport & Leisure Opportunities for local people with a Learning Intellectual Disability.Special Olympics provides year-round sports training & athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children & adults with learning disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy & participate in sharing skills, gifts & friendship with their families & other Special Olympics athletes
Why the community needs usWe ensure that sporting activities are provided in a safe suitable environment with qualified coaches and first aiders. We provide transport to & from sessions which means more participants are able to access sessions, as lack of transport is often a barrier. The sports sessions which take place once a week, not only provide participants with chances to improve their general health and well being by increasing their activity levels, it also provides them with opportunities to interact socially.
Our impact on the communityTaking part in the Special Olympics Programme improves the quality of daily life of people with intellectual (learning) disabilities & their families through sport. All athletes, volunteers & coaches involved with Special Olympics help us achieve our mission & are finding joy, welcome & transformation in this process. One parent was grateful that her son was "able to achieve against all odds" when he won his first gold Medal. Each year we aim to take a team of over 25 competitors to 10 events.
