To design, build and operate a new long-lasting concrete skate park for the people of Shepton Mallet. The previous wooden structure was erected 8 years ago, and has now come to the end of its natural life. It had been removed on safely grounds leaving Shepton Mallet without a skate park for its young people.
Why the community needs usThe need for a skate park in Shepton Mallet has been demonstrated by the heavy use over the past 8 years that the old wooden structure was in existence. A skate park encourages young people to engage in an active lifestyle with all its associated health benefits. The old park was used by upwards of 100 young people over a weekend, and there were even complaints that it wasn't large enough! There are pockets of deprivation in Shepton Mallet. This free facility will be of benefit to everyone.
Our impact on the communityThere was a huge public outcry when the old wooden structure was removed with no clear plans to replace the skate park. Very quickly this 'friends group' was set up and given charitable status, with clear action plans to build a new skate park. With many members of the community offering their active support and fundraising. The 'Save Shepton Mallet Skate Park' facebook page 'at time of print' has over 280 members showing their support.
