Specialist self help support and development organisation based in the centre of Nottingham - services cover the whole of Nottinghamshire. We offer subsidised meeting spaces for groups and start up loans for new groups. 30 years of experience in providing unique resources and reliable information on groups to professionals and the general public; free training calendar, funding advice and development support for new and fledgling groups; and a resource hub on best practice.

Why the community needs us

The closest the UK has to a national self help resource centre is Self Help Nottingham. We support the development and sustainability of over 250 self help groups in Nottinghamshire, providing mutual support to individuals and families. Local communities in Nottinghamshire benefit in many ways including reduced isolation for people living with a long term medical condition. Every self help group serves a unique community of interest for example Bereavement by Suicide or Aphasia Nottingham.

Our impact on the community

The self help and mutual aid approach is key to ensuring individuals have more choice and control over their treatment and has shown to be both clinically effective and supportive of recovery from mental health issues (Joseph Rowntree Foundation, 1998). Social mutual support has as much effect on life expectancy as smoking, high blood pressure, obesity and regular physical activity (JS House et al 1988, Putman R 2000).
