The South East London ME Support Group offers peer support, information, and a programme of social and therapeutic activities to sufferers of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), a debilitating long term health condition. We are run entirely run by member-volunteers.
Why the community needs usME takes away people's jobs, their social life, and sometimes even the ability to dress or feed themselves. It is a poorly understood condition, yet affects about 250,000 people in the UK. Participating in self-help is often what brings a sense of purpose and hope back into people's lives. We share information about the condition and possible treatments, as well as sharing strategies for coping with long term illness.
Our impact on the communityAll our activities empower members to live more fulfilled lives with ME/CFS. We run a telephone outreach team, a quarterly newsletter and regular social meetings to reduce isolation and share information. We have a therapeutic programme of yoga, meditation, hydrotherapy and qigong, which helps to improve wellbeing; a transport fund for housebound member to enable participation. Our benefits information service informs members of their rights to social security.
