Sharedydd arranges and supports hosting of destitute asylum seekers in ordinary people's homes.

Sharedydd supports the hosting of destitute Asylum Seekers in spare rooms in and around Cardiff. Sharedydd supports all aspects of the hosting process including recruiting hosts, interviewing and settling clients into hosts homes and supporting clients with practical issues and transport costs throughout their stay. Our hosts and clients are primarily supported by volunteer 'Link Workers' who receive training and supervision for Sharedydd.

Why the community needs us
Asylum Seekers often become destitute when they reach a break in their case and their Home Office support and accommodation is removed, leaving them completely destitute with nowhere to turn. This does not mean that they don't have a case! Hosting allows clients to focus and engage with their legal cases. We also have volunteer Link Workers who support clients to navigate the legal system and any other services they may need. Many of our clients go back into HO accommodation after hosting.

Our impact on the community
Hosting has so many benefits. At it's most basic it may get someone off the street, out of sleeping on a friend's cold floor etc...and allow them to properly rest and recuperate. It gives clients a sense of safety and security, allowing them the headspace to think about the future. It helps with learning English (and Welsh!) and understanding British Culture. It helps clients feel less alone and more hopeful for their future. It creates friends for life.

We are always looking for new hosts and volunteer mentors to support hosts and clients. We work with the Welsh Refugee Council, Refugees and Home and local charities to make sure our scheme is run safely. Please email us for further information.
