SIGNAL (Support, Information, Guidance and News for Autism in Lewisham) is a mutual support group for families with autistic children and young people in the borough of Lewisham, South East London, UK. Established by parents, and run by parents for parents, we’ve been going since 1993. From the original half dozen families we have swelled to over 700, and also include some schools and professionals as members too. It’s a vibrant community here at SIGNAL! We work hard to try and improve the quality of the lives of our autistic children and young people – educationally, socially and emotionally.
We also offer regular newsletters, specialist talks and an autism-related library. We run children's swimming & trampolining classes, family day trips, social events, a book club, yoga classes and a social group for autistic teens, plus an active Facebook group for parents.
Why the community needs us
We lobby for better services & have strong partnership links with health, education and social services networks in Lewisham. Working closely with schools and organisations such as sports groups and theatres, we are raising awareness of autism through training to improve knowledge and understanding of this neurodiversity. We also consult for local government on autistic children's service design and engage with research bodies to further the understanding of autism.
Our impact on the community
A more supported, integrated and empowered community of parents can better help their autistic children. Shortlisted for Community Business of the Year 2010. Awarded 100% Green Light for governance and practice by Lewisham council under the Traffic Light accreditation system, in 2011.
