The object of the group is to bring together adults with Aphasia and to provide mutual support, encouragement and confidence building. Aphasia is a disability disorder of communication generally resulting from a stroke.

Aphasia can be very isolating. The group allows the members the opportunity and confidence to support and befriend others with similar problems by engaging in conversation, discussions and encouragement with speech, numeracy, writing, reading.

SMASH operates without volunteer helpers as a self help group. Our members are encouraged, over time, to participate as executive members as chairman, secretary, treasurer and fundraiser. Some members have obtained jobs or volunteers elsewhere.
