Special Olympics Sunderland is a non-profit organisation that provide year-round sports coaching for children and adults of all abilities that have an intellectual disability within Sunderland and the surrounding areas.
Why the community needs us
We are the only organisation within Sunderland that offers sporting opportunities and coaching specifically for people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Sunderland offer a safe and friendly environment for our athletes to train in. Our coaches all have a sporting background and are able to pass on our knowledge and skills to our athletes.
We currently have weekly training sessions for our athletes covering a wide range of sports. We also offer a chance to compete locally and regionally within the sports we offer. From the local and regional competitions, athletes have the chance to qualify for national and international competitions and compete at the highest level thanks to pathways set out by Special Olympics GB.
Our impact on the community
We are more than just a sports club. As well as giving our athletes the change to develop there athletic skills and compete, we also offer a social environment for all our athletes and families. Our sessions help make new friendships, increase mental well-being and most of all relax and have fun!
