Support Choices is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation. We began as a project run by a larger charity (Outside the Box, www.otbds.org) in January 2019. We officially became a stand-alone organisation with a Board of Trustees in December 2020.
Support Choices aim is to ensure people in Perth and Kinross have what they need to make informed choices about directing their own care and support. This means that quite often marginalised people are able to take some control back over their support rather than receiving a standardised solution. Support Choices works to provide people with free independent information and advice around what support is available to them and how to access it. We do this in lots of different ways including:
- Helping people to identify outcomes to help them live a better life and support them to have more independence
- Helping people to prepare for care assessments with the local authority and understand the social care options available to them
- Signposting people to other organisations and community groups which benefit their physical and mental health
- Helping people to recruit personal assistants
- Liaising and coordinating support with other organisations
- Advocating for people by attending meetings alongside them
- Helping people to prepare personal support plans
- Supporting people to challenge decisions if they are not happy with the council’s assessment of their care needs and if their outcomes are not being met
- Campaigning on behalf of care service users for better care services at a local and national level
