We are an independent community organisation in the village of Kirtlington. We aim to spread awareness of climate change in the community, through meetings, film screenings, talks, articles in the Village News and other activities. Our current projects are the installation of a hydro turbine on the Cherwell and solar-panels on our main community buildings. We have initiated a group-buying scheme for pv-panels for private homes and businesses in the Kirtlington, Kidlington and Woodstock area.
Why the community needs usWe seek to encourage belief in the potential for individual small actions to make a difference so one of our activities is regular work with the 'Eco Reps' at our primary school. With them we developed a 'Green Cred' questionnaire to send out to all the pupils' families, asking them to think about their energy use. We have generated funds for energy-saving measures in the Village Hall and our hydro scheme will produce income to be passed on as grants to villagers seeking to 'green' their homes.
Our impact on the communityIn 2008 we held a 'Footprint Fair' to raise awareness of climate change. This led to the reinstatement of the annual village fete. In 2010 we worked with the primary school making a film about waste, supported by Cherwell District Council which came first in the Oxfordshire Sustainability and Conservation Awards. Many villagers have been involved in practical work preparing the river for the turbine and in successful fund-raising activities for the hydro scheme.
