Swim Torquay Community Pool serves the local area of Plainmoor, Torquay town, and surrounding area. It provides services to children, seniors, stroke/disabled people, 2 swimming clubs and 20+ schools and the general public. Being situated in a less affluent area of Torquay, it provides a valued centre where clients can engage in water based activities to enhance their health and sense of wellbeing. Pool programmes are tailored to respond to community needs.
Why the community needs usSwim Torquay Ltd was formed in 1977 by community action resulting from the closure of the only public pool in the town. It is run by a committee of elected community members and is self funding. It is a valued community centre, being the only public pool in Torquay - responding to the needs of the community; providing healthy activities for all ages; from babies to senior citizens. It is valued by local people, who have input into its activities, electing the pool's management committee.
Our impact on the communityPositive outcomes result from the "Parents & Tots" group, where parents engage in introducing babies to water activities, and engage in social bonding in the pool's meeting room. The "Fit as a Fish" seniors group, also meet socially over coffee and have Age Concern sponsored talks. "WaterMobilty" programmes for the disabled, approved by the Torbay Care Trust, have achieved positive results by an increase in mobility in most clients. These activities enhance the quality of life for clients.
