The Sensory Place is a constituted community group.
We began in 2019 as a group of parents who wanted disability friendly activities their children could enjoy. We began having sensory sessions over at South Durham Gymnastics in Spennymoor. As the sessions grew in popularity we had our first disability friendly bonfire night. We began to offer monthly sessions in Makaton, we offered Sleep workshops through Cerebra and Mental health first aid courses.
We raised funds via sponsored activities and craft fayres. At the beginning of 2020 we had just had our first Christmas party, we had more sensory sessions at South Durham Gymnastics and we had a brilliant silent disco.
Unfortunately Covid-19 hit and we were forced to suspend all of our normal activities, courses and services. Our families who needed vital support were cut off. We began creating free sensory bags with funds we had raised and made and delivered over 70. As demand grew we were lucky enough to recieve a grant from BGL which allowed us to create and deliver over 100 more.
We realised Covid-19 was here to stay for a while and designed a summer scheme through various funders for a 6 weeks of home activity packs all aimed at the needs of our children and families. We supported 170 children per week with these Packs and they were able to create lasting memories in an uncertain time.
As restrictions began to lift we organised SEN exclusive sessions in Rafted Canoeing, Kayaking, paddle boarding and Forest schools. Activities that were easy to ensure social distancing was maintained but that improved the physical and mental health of our families.
Thank you so much for being on Team Sensory Place. Any funds raised will go towards activities and courses like those listed above as well as Mini first aid courses for our Young Carers, Parent support groups, educational courses in specific areas such as epilepsy and autism and anxiety. When Covid-19 eases up we will be looking to create playgroups for under 5's, over 5's and activities for adults with disabilities also. We would also like to open our own sensory room in which our children could recieve the sensory input they need in a safe environment. The Sensory Place is purely volunteer led and every penny raised goes to the above activities and courses. The Trustees and I will be joining in from our end hoping to raise as much alongside you guys as possible.
Thanks so much for reading and Welcome to Team Sensory Place!
