The Thanet's chief aim is to improve the quality of life for those who live in the local community. We constantly strive to create a safe environment which nourishes and supports creativity, confidence, self development and self worth. Our volunteers consist of a diverse range of people who seek to engage and inspire those around them. The Thanet allows people to be who they want to be, to forge relationships and build communities.
Why the community needs usThe Thanet is situated in an area affected by high levels of social deprivation, and has a very diverse community. We alleviate these problems through provision of a secure and safe environment and a range of activities that meet the community's needs. Large numbers of people, young and old, use our premises regularly. We offer space to Bengali groups, dancers for both young and old, drama, yoga and martial arts groups, a local Caribbean church group and three Cocaine Anonymous groups.
Our impact on the communityThe centre is in use seven days a week from 9am to 9pm all the year round. We hold a weekly coffee morning for 30-50 older residents every Tuesday. We have over eighty children enrolled in our Youth Club, with between ten and twenty children attending each session taking part in activities including boxing, Aikido, yoga, gardening, biodiversity awareness, Theatre skills, puppetry and puppet-making, music and dance.
