Young people with learning disabilities often struggle when they leave education, because their special needs are not easily met.In response to this need, a group of Basingstoke-based parents, friends and supporters started the Café Project Charity in 2010.The Café Project provides an environment for both practical training and social support for people with learning disabilities. Once the training is completed we will support each student to find work or voluntary placements in the community.

Why the community needs us

The main aim of the project is to support people with learning disabilities through offering an accredited training qualification in catering and hospitality in our community cafe. Through the training we support students to gain good interpersonal skills and increase their confidence and self esteem. Cafe Dome offers a community hub to local people and a meeting place for many diverse community groups. The cafe provides affordable food, drink, hall hire and buffet services to its customers.

Our impact on the community

So far we have offered training to 21 students since September 2011. 8 students have found work or voluntary placements. Our students are supported by staff and volunteers who are offered appropriate training in Learning Disability and Food Hygiene. In October 2013 we started a Friendship groups for people with Learning Disabilities to meet and make friends and access community opportunities.
